Thank you for coming today! This concert is a celebration of new music written for old words. The Psalms are a rich part of Christian worship and devotional life. These choral settings are in answer to a call I felt in September of 2019 to give a new musical voice to the words of the Psalms. My family quartet has been singing these one by one as they were composed, and throughout the pandemic we were one of the only ‘choirs’ still going. Now that we all have been given some breathing room, it’s been a real joy to gather many of my musical friends from various musical endeavors (Central Baptist Church Chamber Choir, the Traditional Carolers from Butchart Gardens, Hexaphone, & Vancouver Island Performers’ Guild to mention a few) and to share this music with you.

Psalm 1

Blessed is the man

  who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,

nor stands in the path of sinners,

    nor sits in the seat of scoffers;

but his delight is in the law of the Lord,

    and on his law he meditates,

  meditates day and night.

For he is like a tree

    planted by streams of water

that brings forth its fruit in its season,

    whose leaf also does not wither.

And whatever he does, everything he does,

    everything he does shall prosper.

The ungodly are not so,

    but are like chaff that the wind blows away.

Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment,

    nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;

for the Lord knows the way of the righteous,

    but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

Blessed is the man

  Whose delight is in the law of the Lord.

Psalm 4

Answer me when I call,

O God of my righteousness!

You have given me relief

  when I was in distress.

Be gracious to me and hear my prayer!

O man, how long shall my honor

    be turned into shame?

How long will you love vain words

   and seek after lies?

But know that the Lord

    has set apart the godly for himself;

    the Lord hears when I call to him.

Be angry, and do not sin;

    ponder in your own hearts

    on your beds, and be silent.

Offer right sacrifices,

    and put your trust in the Lord.

There are many who say,

   “Who will show us some good?

    Lift up the light of your face upon us, O Lord!”

You have put more joy in my heart

    than they have when their

    grain and wine abound.

In peace I will both lie down,

   lie down and sleep;

for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.

Psalm 13

How long, O Lord?

Will you forget me forever?

How long will you hide your face from me?

How long must I take counsel in my soul

    and have sorrow in my heart all the day?

How long shall my enemy

   be exalted over me?

Consider and answer me,

   O Lord my God;

light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death,

lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,”

    lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken.

But I have trusted in your steadfast love;

    my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.

I will sing to the Lord,

    because he has dealt so bountifully with me.

Psalm 19 (In 3 Parts)

Part 1

The heavens declare the glory of God,

    and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.

Day to day pours out speech,

    and night to night reveals knowledge.

There is no speech, nor are there words,

    whose voice is not heard.

Their voice goes out through all the earth,

    and their words to the end of the world.

In them he has set a tent for the sun,

      which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber,

    and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy.

Its rising is from the end of the heavens,

    and its circuit to the end of them,

    and there is nothing hidden from its heat.

Part 2

The law of the Lord is perfect,

    reviving the soul;

the testimony of the Lord is sure,

    making wise the simple;

the precepts of the Lord are right,

    rejoicing the heart;

the commandment of the Lord is pure,

    enlightening the eyes;

the fear of the Lord is clean,

    enduring forever;

the rules of the Lord are true,

    and righteous altogether.

More to be desired are they than gold,

    even much fine gold;

sweeter also than honey

    and drippings of the honeycomb.

Moreover, by them is your servant warned;

    in keeping them there is great reward.

Part 3

    Who can discern his errors?

    Declare me innocent from hidden faults.

Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins;

    let them not have dominion over me!

Then I shall be blameless,

    and innocent of great transgression.

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart

    be acceptable in your sight,

    O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

    He makes me lie down in pastures green .

He leads me beside still waters.

    He restores my soul.

He leads me in paths of righteousness

    for his name's sake.

Even though I walk through the

    valley of the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil, for you are with me;

    your rod and your staff,

    they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me

    in the presence of my enemies;

you anoint my head with oil;

    my cup overflows.

Surely goodness and mercy

    shall follow me

    all the days of my life,

and I shall dwell in the

    house of the Lord

    Forever and ever, forevermore.

Psalm 27

The Lord is my light and my salvation;

    whom shall I fear?

The Lord is the stronghold of my life;

    of whom shall I be afraid?

When evildoers assail me

    to eat up my flesh,

my adversaries and foes,

    it is they who stumble and fall.

Though an army encamp against me,

    my heart shall not fear;

though war arise against me,

    yet I will be confident.

One thing have I asked of the Lord,

    that will I seek after:

that I may dwell in the house of the Lord

    all the days of my life,

to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord

    and to inquire in his temple.

For he will hide me in his shelter

    in the day of trouble;

he will conceal me under

   the cover of his tent;

he will lift me high upon a rock.

   And now my head shall be lifted up

    above my enemies all around me,

and I will offer in his tent

    sacrifices with shouts of joy;

I will sing and make melody to the Lord.

Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud;

    be gracious to me and answer me!

You have said, “Seek my face.”

My heart says to you,

    “Your face, Lord, do I seek.”

Hide not your face from me.

Turn not your servant away in anger,

    O you who have been my help.

Cast me not off; forsake me not,

    O God of my salvation!

For my father and my mother

    have forsaken me,

    but the Lord will take me in.

Teach me your way, O Lord,

    and lead me on a level path

    because of my enemies.

Give me not up to the will

    of my adversaries;

    for false witnesses have risen against me,

    and they breathe out violence.

I believe that I shall look upon

    the goodness of the Lord

    in the land of the living!

Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let

    your heart take courage in the Lord;

    O wait for the Lord!

Psalm 29

Ascribe to the Lord, you heavenly beings,

   ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.

Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;

    worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.

The voice of the Lord is over the waters;

    the God of glory thunders,

   the Lord, over many waters.

The voice of the Lord is powerful;

    the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.

The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;

   He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf,

    and Sirion like a young wild ox.

The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.

    the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

The voice of the Lord makes the deer give birth,

    strips the forests bare,

    and in his temple all cry, “Glory!”

The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;

    the Lord sits enthroned as king forever.

May the Lord give strength to all of his people!

    May the Lord bless his people with peace!

Psalm 33

Sing joyfully to the Lord, you righteous;

    it is fitting for the upright to praise him.

Praise the Lord with the harp;

    make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.

Sing to him a new song;

    play skillfully, and shout for joy.

For the word of the Lord is right and true;

    he is faithful in all he does.

The Lord loves righteousness and justice;

    the earth is full of his unfailing love.

By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,

    their starry host by the breath of his mouth.

He gathers the waters of the sea into jars;

    he puts the deep into storehouses.

Let all the earth fear the Lord;

   Let the earth fear the Lord,

    let all the people of the earth revere him.

For he spoke, and it came to be;

    he commanded, and it stood firm.

We wait in hope for the Lord;

    he is our help and our shield.

In him our hearts rejoice,

    for we trust in his holy name.

May your unfailing love be with us, O Lord,

    even as we put our trust in you.

--intermission--

Psalm 46

God is our refuge and strength,

    a very present help in trouble.

Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,

    though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,

though its waters roar and foam,

    though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Alleluia

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,

    the holy habitation of the Most High.

God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;

    God will help her when morning dawns.

The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;

    he utters his voice, the earth melts.

The Lord of hosts is with us;

    the God of Jacob is our fortress. Alleluia

Come, behold the works of the Lord,

    how he has brought desolations on the earth.

He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;

    he breaks the bow and shatters the spear;

    he burns the chariots with fire.

“Be still, and know that I am God.

    I will be exalted among the nations,

    I will be exalted in the earth!”

The Lord of hosts is with us;

    the God of Jacob is our fortress. Alleluia

Psalm 47

Clap your hands, all ye peoples!

    Shout to God with loud songs of joy,

Clap your hands, all ye peoples and sing,

    Sing to God, sing praises,

Sing praise to our King,

   Sing praise to our King

   Sing praises to God!

The Lord has gone up with a shout,

  with a shout,

  with the sound of a trumpet.

For God is the King of all the earth;

    sing praises with a psalm!

He rules over the nations,

He sits on His holy throne.

The Lord most high is to be feared

  He is highly exalted.

The Lord has gone up with a shout,

  with a shout,

  with the sound of a trumpet.

Psalm 61

Hear my cry, O God,

    and listen to my prayer;

from the end of the earth I call to you

    when my heart is faint.

Lead me to the rock

    that is higher than I,

for you have been my refuge,

    a strong tower against the enemy.

Let me dwell within your tent forever!

Let me take refuge under

   the shadow of your wings!

Alleluia!

Psalm 62

For God alone my soul waits in silence;

    from him comes my salvation.

He alone is my rock and my salvation,

    my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.

How long will all of you attack a man

    to batter him,

    like a leaning wall, a tottering fence?

They only plan to thrust him down

    from his high position.

They take pleasure in falsehood.

They bless with their mouths,

    but inwardly they curse.

For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,

    for my hope is in him.

Only He is my rock and my salvation,

    my fortress; I shall not be shaken.

On God rests my salvation and my glory;

    my mighty rock, my refuge is God.

Trust in him at all times, O people;

    pour out your heart before him;

    God is a refuge for us.

Those of low estate are but a breath;

    those of high estate are a delusion;

in the balance they go up;

    they together are lighter than a breath,

   than a breath, they together are lighter than a breath.

Put no trust in extortion;

    set no vain hopes on robbery;

    if riches increase, set not your heart on them.

Once God has spoken;

    twice have I heard this:

that power belongs to God,

And that to you, O Lord,

    belongs steadfast love.

For you will render to a man

    according to his works.

On God rests my salvation and my glory;

    my mighty rock,

    my refuge is the Lord.

Psalm 67

O God, be gracious to us and bless us,

  Make your face to shine upon us,

That your way may be known on earth,

  Your saving power in all nations.

Let the peoples praise you, O God,

  Let all the peoples praise you.

The earth has yielded its increase,

  God, our God, shall bless us.

Let the ends of the earth revere his name,

  O God, our God shall bless us.

Let the nations be glad and sing for joy.

  For you judge all people with fairness and love

  And chart the course of the nations.

Let the peoples praise you, O God,

  Let all the peoples praise you.

  Amen!

Psalm 131

O Lord, my heart is not lifted up;

    my eyes are not raised too high;

I do not occupy myself with things

    too great and too marvelous for me.

But I have calmed and quieted my soul,

    like a weaned child with its mother;

    like a weaned child is my soul within me.

O Israel, hope in the Lord

    from this time forth and forevermore.

Psalm 136

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,

    for his steadfast love endures forever.

Give thanks to the God of gods,

Give thanks to the Lord of lords,

to him who alone does great wonders,

to him who by understanding made the heavens,

to him who spread out the earth above the waters,

to him who made the great lights,

the sun to rule over the day,

the moon and stars to rule over the night,

    for his steadfast love endures forever;

It is he who remembered us in our low estate,

and rescued us from our foes,

he who gives food to all flesh,

  for his steadfast love endures forever;

Give thanks to the God of heaven,

    for his steadfast love endures forever.

Psalm 139

O Lord, you have searched me and known me!

You know when I sit down and when I rise up;

 You discern my thoughts from afar.

    You search out my path and my lying down

    and are acquainted with all my ways.

Even before a word is on my tongue,

    behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.

You hem me in, behind and before,

    and lay your hand upon me.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;

    it is high; I cannot attain it.

Where shall I go from your Spirit?

    Or where shall I flee from your presence?

If I ascend to heaven, you are there!

    If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!

If I take the wings of the morning

    and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,

even there your hand shall lead me,

    and your right hand shall hold me.

If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me,

    and the light about me be night,”

even the darkness is not dark to you;

    the night is bright as day,

    for darkness is as light with you.

For you formed my inward parts;

    you knitted me together in my mother's womb.

I praise you, for I am fearfully

    and wonderfully made.

Wonderful are your works;

    my soul knows it very well.

My frame was not hidden from you,

when I was being made in secret,

    intricately woven in the depths of the earth.

Your eyes saw my unformed substance;

in your book were written, every one of them,

 The days that were formed for me,

    when as yet there was none of them.

How precious to me are your thoughts, O God!

    How vast is the sum of them!

If I would count them,

   they are more than the sand.

    I awake, and I am still with you.

Search me, O God, and know my heart!

    Try me and know my thoughts!

And see if there be any grievous way in me,

    and lead me in the way everlasting!

Psalm 148

Praise the Lord!

Praise the Lord from the heavens;

Praise Him in the heights!

Praise Him, all His angels;

Praise Him, all His hosts!

Praise Him, sun and moon;

Praise Him, all you stars of light!

Praise Him, you heavens of heavens,

And you waters above the heavens!

Let them praise the name of the Lord,

For He commanded and they were created.

He established them forever and ever;

He made a decree which shall not pass away.

Praise the Lord from the earth,

You great sea creatures and all the depths;

Fire and hail, snow and clouds;

Stormy wind, fulfilling His word;

Mountains and all hills;

Fruitful trees and all cedars;

Beasts and all cattle;

Creeping things and flying fowl;

Kings of the earth and all peoples;

Princes and all judges of the earth;

Young men and maidens;

Old men and children.

Let them praise the name of the Lord,

For His name alone is exalted;

His glory is above the earth and heaven.

And He has exalted the horn of His people,

The praise of all His saints—

Of the children of Israel,

A people next to Him.

Praise the Lord!

Psalm 150

Praise the Lord!

Praise God in his sanctuary;

    praise him in his mighty heavens!

Praise him for his acts of power;

    praise him for his surpassing greatness!

Praise him with the sound of the trumpet;

    praise him with the harp and lyre!

Praise him with timbrel and with dancing;

    praise him with the strings and pipe!

Praise him with the clash of cymbals,

  The clash of resounding cymbals!

   Let everything that has breath

    praise the Lord, praise the Lord!

    Praise, O praise the Lord!

Overman Carol 2008: “Our Dear God Does It All for You”

Lyrics by Dr. Richard Overman, music by Robert Overman

Above all worlds the Son is born within the Father's heart,

begotten as Perfection, from His Father not apart.

All Beauty, Truth, and Love they share in boundless sympathy,

and with the Spirit live as One in Holy Trinity.

Chorus: How can it be, this wondrous birth, beyond all explanation?

"Our dear God does it all for you!" sing angels in elation.

As Uncreated Light of all the worlds the Son is born,

the pattern of all Time and Space, Creation's early morn.

The rolling spheres rest in His hand and sound their deep refrain

in harmonies drawn by His Word, revealing His domain.

    Chorus

In Bethlehem the Son is born from Mary's virgin womb;

the Perfect Man appears on earth midst beauty and perfume.

Archangels sing and stars rejoice, while kings before Him kneel,

for in His birth Heav'n's secret stores their treasures now reveal.

    Chorus

'Tis Christmas, blessed Christmas, when the circle of the year

reveals its shining Center, and the Son of God comes near,

To melt our frozen hearts with love and take us by the hand,

until the day we too are born in Heaven's Happy Land!

    Chorus
